[2:08]  In this excerpt, water colour artist Alfred Memelink shows us the problem of using beach sand in concrete when building. After purchasing a 1939 building on the Petone foreshore he wanted to document the process of renovating it into his dream gallery. He soon discovered that the builders had used beach sand from across the road in their concrete, which of course is full of sea salt, a natural corrosive to metal. He also discovered that it would be much cheaper to pull it all down and erect a new building. In this excerpt on the day before demolition begins, he shows how the concrete and steel enforcing rods have been eaten away by rust.
